As the New Year begins, many of us dream about making positive changes. For some, that dream includes mastering a new language like English or French. But how do you turn that dream into a reality? Let me share some tips, based on my 15 years of teaching and personal experience as a language learner, to help you set small, concrete, and actionable goals that can guide you to success in 2025.
Start with Your "Why"
The first step to success is understanding why you want to learn a language. Do you have an upcoming trip, a professional opportunity, or a personal goal that motivates you? Identifying this reason will keep you focused and inspired, especially when the going gets tough.
From my own experience, I initially traveled to France for a semester as a university student.
That brief experience lit a spark. I knew I wanted to live abroad—and not just visit. Learning French became my ticket to that dream, and my motivation fueled my discipline and determination.
The Power of Small, Concrete Goals
Big goals like "Become fluent in English" can feel overwhelming. Instead, break them down into smaller, manageable steps. For example:
Week 1: Learn 10 common expressions you can use in daily conversations.
Week 2: Practice introducing yourself and asking basic questions.
Week 3: Watch one short video or TV episode in the language and write down three new words or phrases you learned.
Week 4: Practice writing a short email or message using the phrases and vocabulary you've learned. Add a final challenge: go to a Polyglot language exchange and speak French or English with a stranger to test your skills in a real-life setting.
Once you achieve a small goal, celebrate your progress and set a new one. This approach creates momentum and helps you stay on track.
Make Language Learning a Priority
Let’s face it: life gets busy. But those who succeed in learning a language don’t wait for free time to appear—they make time. Here are a few strategies to help you prioritize your learning:
Create a Schedule: Dedicate specific days and times for practice. Even 15 minutes a day adds up.
Integrate Language into Your Routine: Watch movies or listen to podcasts in the language you’re learning. Practice speaking while cooking or commuting.
Set Reminders: Use apps or sticky notes to remind yourself of your goals.
Stay Organized and Disciplined
Discipline doesn’t mean perfection. It means showing up, even on days when you don’t feel like it. Being organized will make it easier:
Use Tools: Apps like Duolingo for vocabulary, and ELLII for structured lessons, can be game-changers in your e-learning journey.
Track Your Progress: Keep a journal to note what you’ve learned and reflect on your improvements.
Find Accountability: Partner with a teacher or a language buddy to keep yourself on track.
